Violence in Gold Rush California
California grew rapidly in the wake of the discovery of gold in 1848. As newcomers arrived from around the world, the boom brought both opportunity and lawlessness. Robberies, duels, and murders influenced many residents to arm themselves with Deringer pistols, Colt revolvers, pepperbox pistols, and Bowie knives.
This case is part of the permanent collection at the Autry Museum, Los Angeles, CA.
